june 13 second saturday poetry reading postponed
Dear poets, friends, and writing community at large,
Given the continuing onslaught of police violence, as well as the more urgent need to protest for change, Exhume Magazine and Pumphouse Players have decided to postpone the first installment of our Second Saturday readings, which was scheduled for June 13th. We suggest that any donations that were planned for the month of June be sent to the NAACP, or any bailout, police reform, or racial justice fund you deem fit.
I am also cancelling the next installment of the Exhume Generative Writing Workshops, which was scheduled for June 19th, in order to prevent any workshop participants from having to choose between the workshop and the celebration or observation of Juneteenth.
At the onset of these projects I hoped to create space for writers and creatives to be able to come together virtually for a sense of community during the pandemic. As the last few weeks have progressed, it has become clear that other causes are much more urgent. I do not want to detract from the current movement in any way. Exhume was founded in the interest of publishing and uplifting diverse voices, and must live up to that mission.
If you are still interested in submitting a video for the July reading, we will gladly add you to the event docket. The July reading event will be held on Saturday, July 11th, at 8pm. Videos for the reading will be due by July 6th.
The revised schedule for future workshops is as follows:
Best,
Scarlett
